All about this podcast:

In this podcast episode, host Ariella Aharonof works with a 'desparate' Mom to create strategies for dealing with her 3 1/2 year-old daughter's meltdowns.

0 – 4 minutes: Ariella welcomes her guest for this episode – an exhausted Mom of a strong-willed 3 ½ year old.   ‘Mom’ provides Ariella with background of her daughter’s behavior, including age of onset, typical episodes and a description of ‘Meltdown City,’ bouts of extreme behavior by her daughter when her wishes are not fulfilled.

4 – 13 minutes: Ariella and Mom discuss some of the mitigating factors that may be contributing to the child’s extreme ‘acting-out’ behavior as well as the parents’ strategies for dealing with a tantrum.

13 – 19 minutes: Ariella works with Mom to identify her daughter’s base behavior patterns and suggests strategies for de-escalating a melt-down through empathy, modeling and direct communication.

19 – 23 minutes: Ariella addresses timing, schedules and priorities and suggests ways that the parents can begin the process of shaping new behavior and coping skills in their daughter.

23 – 43 minutes: Ariella employs role-playing to demonstrate suggested dialog that the parents can use to diffuse a ‘meltdown,’ help their daughter reframe the situation and encourage their daughter to create alternate solutions when her wishes cannot be met.
